What Is Pulmonary Rehab (PR)?
The Pulmonary Rehab Program is a ten-week course that meets twice a week and is designed to provide comprehensive care to individuals with pulmonary disease. Once enrolled in the program, you will work with a team of pulmonary rehab specialists who will tailor the exercise sessions to meet your specific needs.
Your medical status and progress will be monitored and evaluated.
- Educational sessions include:
- Proper breathing techniques
- The role of medications
- Energy conservation
- Proper nutrition
- Stress management
Each program requires an order from your primary care physician to begin.
Who Should Attend Pulmonary Rehab?
The program is designed for patients with chronic lung diseases such as emphysema, asthma, chronic bronchitis, and fibrosis, as well as other conditions.
- Those whose shortness of breath compromises their lifestyle
- Those who want to learn more about their disease and ways to manage it
- Those who want to learn techniques to improve their breathing
- Those who want to attain the highest level of independent function
How Will I Know If It’s Right for Me?
Your healthcare provider will determine if you qualify for pulmonary rehabilitation by:
- Evaluating your current state of health and lung function test results
- Discussing your current activity levels and your ability to do the things you want to do
- Determining your willingness and ability to attend
Pulmonary Rehab programs are limited in the number of people who can attend so that you receive close supervision. You will be evaluated before you begin the program to ensure you do not have health issues that would limit your ability to participate. This evaluation will take place in the Cardiopulmonary Department at the hospital.
Once the program begins, the respiratory therapist will work with you to put you in charge of your breathing!
If you have shortness of breath because of lung problems, you might have to ask yourself:
- Can I exercise, or should I avoid it because it makes me short of breath?
- How can I get in better shape and have more energy if I am short of breath every time I try to exercise?
- What medications do I really need to take?
What Are the Benefits of Pulmonary Rehabilitation?
For many graduates, the program has been able to help them:
- Control and alleviate symptoms
- Increase exercise tolerance
- Decrease anxiety and depression commonly associated with pulmonary disease
- Learn more about their disease
- Feel better about themselves
