Becoming a Radiologic Technologist
View Full DocumentMay 23, 2026
SATANTA, KS — In small towns across America, the local hospital isn’t just another building on Main Street; it’s a lifeline. When a farmer falls from a combine during harvest. When a high school basketball player lands wrong and hears that unmistakable crack. When a grandparent has been quietly living with pain and finally decides it’s time to find out why. That’s when imaging matters and for many, they never gave a second thought to the people behind it.
For many people who live in rural America, they assume that they can’t stay close to home and make a decent income. They assume that being a medical professional takes a long time and that it is difficult to find a position even if they went through years of study, but most people don’t know just how quickly they can learn to become a Radiology Technician and just how in demand those positions are.
One of the biggest surprises is how attainable the path is. Radiologic technologists typically earn an associate degree, which can be completed in about two to three years at institutions such as Fort Hays State University and Washburn University. Some programs are also offered online with partnership at other institutions for in-person training. The coursework can be rigorous, but it is all practical and has a clear purpose. After completing the coursework, Rad Tech students then go through clinical rotations where they work in hospitals and imaging centers, giving them hands-on experience and further insight into how meaningful the work is. After graduating, students take the national certification exam and must meet state licensure requirements.
One of the biggest myths about healthcare careers is that one must move to a city to make them worthwhile. That isn’t always the case. Radiologic technologists are in demand everywhere, but especially in rural communities. Small hospitals need skilled imaging professionals to maintain emergency readiness and reduce patient travel. That demand translates into job security and competitive wages, even in small towns. For many, it means middle-class stability without uprooting their lives. They didn’t have to choose between meaningful work and staying rooted in their community.
Additionally, radiologic technology isn’t static. There are opportunities to specialize in CT, MRI, Mammography, DEXA, fluoroscopy, interventional imaging, or PACS administration. There are leadership, education, quality, and safety roles. In a rural hospital, one often develops a broad skill set because they work closely with physicians, nurses, and administrators. That collaboration builds confidence quickly. The opportunities to cross-train into other modalities are abundant in rural hospitals, as flexibility is needed within smaller departments. They’re not just operating equipment; you’re part of a coordinated team that delivers care.
If reading this sparked something in you, even just a little curiosity, take one small step. Talk to someone who works in healthcare. Reach out to your local hospital and ask about job shadowing in imaging. Look up the nearest radiologic technology program. You don’t have to have your whole future mapped out. You don’t have to be completely certain. Sometimes it starts with a conversation. Sometimes it starts with a question. And sometimes that one small step leads to a career that serves your community and sustains your future.
Senior Behavior Health Needs in Satanta
View Full DocumentMay 26, 2026
SATANTA, KS — Maintaining good mental health is important at any age, but during recent years even more attention has been focused on the mental health of older adults. Today within the United States, seniors who are 65 years and older are the fastest growing age group and people who are 80+ are expected to surge from 13 million to over 32 million in the next 25 years and these statistics are especially true here in Southwest Kansas.
Thankfully, Satanta District Hospital has been both progressive and proactive in this region. Satanta District Hospital has offered specialized mental health treatment for older adults for several years. Recent changes to the Senior Behavioral Treatment program were made in the fall of 2024 resulted in the program being recognized nationally in 2025, and now in 2026, as one of the best programs of this type in the Signet Healthcare system.
While seniors have traditionally not been open to talk therapy/counseling, mental health professionals have seen a shift in attitudes. More seniors have been attempting mental health treatment. Even more encouraging, national statistics are revealing that older people often get better results in shorter timeframes than adults in their 30s, 40s, and 50s.
Unexpected hardships can happen quickly for older adults, including health issues, loss of spouses, and major changes in housing and independence. Addressing the depression and anxiety that often occurs with these sudden changes as soon as possible has shown impressive results for helping seniors remain positive and hopeful in managing and adjusting to their new realities.
Nationally, as more older adults seek mental health support/treatment, the fact is that the workforce is not prepared to meet this growing need. Professionals with this specialty do not even exist in many areas, but Satanta District Hospital has distinguished themselves in being ready to meet this need. The Senior Behavioral Health program is headed by an experienced psychotherapist who is also an aging specialist. Medical oversight for the program is provided by a psychiatrist who also has a specialty in geriatric psychiatry, which is rare to find.
If you or someone you know might be interested in learning more about mental health treatment, you are welcome to inquire about the program more and/or refer yourself. Each potential patient goes through an assessment process to see if they are a good fit for the program. The initial assessment is completely free. Once accepted, we can offer transportation in Satanta and surrounding towns such as Liberal and Garden City. Our program is Medicare approved and all treatment is outpatient.
We are just a phone call away; feel free to call with any questions or concerns at (620) 682-4951.

March 24, 2026
SATANTA, KS — Satanta District Hospital is pleased to announce the successful completion of its first apprenticeship program participant, Nayeli Chavira. Ms. Chavira completed the pharmacy technician apprenticeship while working at the Satanta Retail Pharmacy and recently passed her Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPht) exam, officially earning her certification.
The apprenticeship program at Satanta District Hospital is supported through a Kansas Department of Labor Kansas Works grant. To qualify, participants must be employed at SDH for at least six months, commit to continued employment following program completion, and hold a high school diploma or GED. Through the grant, SDH covers the cost of the online training program, allowing apprentices to earn their certification or degree without financial burden.
Apprentices are provided up to five hours per week of paid study time during work hours while maintaining their regular schedule and pay. This “earn as you learn” model allows participants to gain hands-on experience in their role while completing academic and technical training through an online program, helping them progress more quickly toward certification and service in their field.
In addition to training and experience, apprentices receive two pay increases throughout the program—one upon completing 50% of their coursework and another upon program completion. This structure is designed to encourage continued progress and successful completion of the program.
Satanta District Hospital is proud to invest in local talent and support individuals who wish to build their careers close to home while contributing to the growing need for skilled professionals in rural healthcare.
SDH plans to continue offering apprenticeship opportunities as long as staffing needs exist. Those interested in learning more about apprenticeship programs at SDH may contact Director of Human Resources Veronica Heredia at (620) 682-8426 ext. 247.
